A HISTORICAL PROFILEOriginally funded by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, the Hoquiam Library was built in 1911. It's on the National Register of Historic Places & is known as a rare example of the Prairie Style of Architecture found in the Pacific Northwest.
The original building was designed by the architectural firm of Claude & Starck of Madison, Wisconsin. Louis Claude was a former associate & lifelong friend of architects Louis Sullivan & Frank Lloyd Wright. Claude & Starck's work reflects this influence.
The building was enlarged & remodeled in 1991 by Tonkin/Koch Architects of Seattle with a bond voted for by the citizens of Hoquiam. The two level interior has the look of a classic library with dark wood trim, stained glass windows, Craftsman style furnishings, some of the original oak tables & chairs, a brick fireplace, a mahogany grandfather clock dating from 1911, & works by local artists.
FRIENDS OF THE HOQUIAM LIBRARY
A group of volunteers, the Friends of the Hoquiam Library, has been the library's booster club since 1970. They help to support the library through fundraising efforts such as book sales. They offer weekly book sales every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Their monthly business meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 12:00 noon followed by a brown bag lunch social time. Their financial assistance helps to provide programs & activities for all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens. Over the years, they've also provided funds to purchase additional furnishings & plantings for the inside & outside of the library & much much more.
