WORKING WITH YOU FOR A SAFER COMMUNITY
As your new Chief of Police since May of 2006, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your continued support of the Officers and staff of our department. The involvement of citizens at the Chief-Community Ward Meetings, the feedback we have received by phone and email, as well as your willingness to get involved in your neighborhood has been very positive.
.
In the future, we look forward to expanding the ways we can serve the community, to include creating a Senior Patrol and an Explorer Post. The Senior Patrol would consist of Hoquiam volunteers over the age of 55, to help the department conduct vacation checks, business security checks, traffic control and administrative tasks. The Explorer Post would be an outlet for youth ages 16 to 20 to experience law enforcement by riding with Officers, helping with traffic control, and conducting security at local events.
Your participation is key in making Hoquiam a safe community in which to live, work and play. Our new department mission statement clearly makes you our partner in fighting crime: “Through community partnerships and problem solving, we will take a unified stance against crime, violence, disorder and disregard for the law. In cooperation with the citizens we serve, we will help build Hoquiam to be stronger and more self sufficient- a community in which crime and disorder will not be tolerated.”
As Hoquiam School Superintendent Mike Parker explains, a strong community makes for strong schools. For us at the Hoquiam Police Department, we see a strong community as a safe community. We are your partners- your “criminal justice technicians”- who will put the cases together and make the arrests. But you are our eyes and ears; you set the standards for this community and hold the line against crime and disorder.
As your Chief of Police, I look forward to your continued involvement and support. Keep those tips and feedback coming in- if you have concerns or issues in your neighborhood, at your business or at your school, please contact the police department. For emergencies or crimes in progress, call 911. If you want to volunteer, of have other police business, our office number is 360-532-0892. We are proud to serve.

SENIOR CITIZEN PATROL In future months, we will be organizing a Senior Citizen Patrol in Hoquiam. This patrol will check on homes while residents are on vacation, assist with traffic control details and be the extra eyes and ears for our patrol officers on the street.
| PRACTICE BICYCLE SAFETY
Bicycles are legally considered "vehicles" on Washington’s roadways. That means bicyclists must obey the rules of the road like drivers of any other vehicle and must be treated as equal users by all other vehicles... The best way to avoid accidents is to be prepared and be aware of other vehicles around you. Avoid common bicyclist errors and common motorist errors committed around bicyclists....

COMMUNITY POLICE MEETINGS
As the department makes plans for the future, it is important that the citizens we serve direct our efforts. In September & October of this year, we will be scheduling Chief-Community Police Meetings in each of the six wards within Hoquiam. I look forward to meeting more residents at those meetings and I always appreciate the input of those we serve at any time.
